About Least of These Food Pantry

Least Of These is the only full service food pantry serving Christian County, the fastest growing county in the state of Missouri. Over 8000 people in Christian County live in poverty.

Least Of These started in 1998 as a community outreach project of a Nixa Church. In its first month, 7 families received food. By the end of its first year 100 families were receiving food.

Least Of These has steadily grown over the past 11 years expanding its service to include free clothing and household items.

In 2008 the pantry helped 1064 Christian County families with food (176 tons), clothing and household items. Close to 3000 people received assistance.

Least Of These is a vital resource for people in need because:

Food stamp amounts do not keep up with rising food prices
Food stamps cannot buy personal care items or cleaning supplies
Government commodities do not provide enough to help make a meal - rarely do we receive cereal and never receive fresh vegetables or healthy protein such as eggs and fresh meat.

Least Of These, Inc. is a 501(c)3 nonprofit, nondenominational organization.
Donations are tax deductible. Missouri currently offers a 50% income tax credit for donations.

A Family in Need

"We have 3 in our family and do receive food stamps. However, we only get about $140 a month and it doesn't get all we need. We are very creative and conservative with food/meal choices but still run out. We shop at thrift stores and only discount places and only eat at home so there is no unnecessary money going out" — a new family in March, with a working Dad, trying their best to get by on a minimum wage job.

This new family at the pantry has 7 in the household. The Dad was working full time to support his wife, 4 children ages two through 14, and his senior mother-in-law. After a terrible accident at home, he cannot work for the foreseeable future and will not qualify for unemployment. Applying for disability takes months, even years. — another new family in March with a desperate need for assistance.
